Douglas Hardy, Chairman
Doug Hardy was born and brought up in
New England, attended Tufts and then received his Ph.D. in Economics
from Duke in 1974. Research for his dissertation was done in Japan
at the Nihon Keizai Kenkyu Center where he also married one of the
secretaries, 26 years ago.
He spent 18 years in Citibank working in
Japan (twice), the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. For the last eight years he has been
in Japan where he started and then ran the credit card business
for the Associates First Capital Corp. (now part of Citi Group).
In June 2000 he joined AIG to start a consumer finance business. Recently retired from AIG, Doug is now teaching economics part-time at Temple University, Japan. |

Erik Hadland, Secretary
Erik graduated from St. Olaf as a history major, 1980. He spent six years in Taipei teaching, studying, and translating Sun Tzu Warfare Methods. In 1990 he earned his MBA from the University
of Minnesota. Erik is currently adjunct faculty at Chuo, Meiji, and Kokushikan universities.

Lois "Bambi" Kawashima
"Bambi" was born and raised in New York City. After receiving her B.A. in Speech and Theater from Long Island University and her M.A. in Theater Arts from Adelphi University, she decided to come to Japan "for a year or so" to further her study of Japanese theater, specifically Kabuki. That was in 1969 and she is still here.
In the intervening years, Bambi has held various teaching positions and currently works as a translator, editor, copywriter and desktop publisher. She became active in RAJ in 1990 and has served the organization in various capacities, among them as the first editor and publisher of the newsletter, RAJ Update, website designer and webmaster.

Dan Riley, Web Master
Dan Riley was born on a farm in Pennsylvania
to a family of staunch Republicans. At the age of 9 he started to
play the trombone. After graduating from Duquesne University in
1974 and Youngstown State University in 1976, Dan went on the road
with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. After touring Japan in 1977 and
1978, he decided to come back to Japan and experience life over
here. He eventually got a job teaching music in
Yokohama and has been playing swing music with his group, the Blue
Trombones, and teaching music ever since. When not busy with work,
you can see him once a month in Yokohama with the comedy team Improhama,
the Yokohama Theatre Group's improvisation and comedy troupe. |
